This event will highlight the uses of mapping software, web-based platforms and geographical information systems, in relation to all forms of research. The main talks are themed around infectious disease, including the mapping of the current 'swine flu' pandemic, and we invite attendance and abstracts from individuals who are involved in other forms of health or academic activity. The day will include -

  • Invited speakers to present on their topic
  • Submission of abstracts for oral speaking slots
  • An extended lunch session to include viewing of posters, electronic 'poster presentations' that can give demos of the researchers work, plus also computer terminals set up with Google Maps/Earth for delegates to have a go themselves and/or watch demonstrations of what can be done.

Confirmed speakers include -

  • Mikaela Keller, Harvard Medical School, USA - Mapping the influenza A H1N1 outbreak
  • Russell Stothard, Natural History Museum - Use of GIS / GPS in schistosomiasis research
  • David Aanensen, Imperial College London - www.spatialepidemiology.net - tools for mapping infectious disease epidemiology
  • Mat Fisher, Imperial College London - Using Google Earth to identify populations and invasions in emerging fungal infections
  • Marianne Sinka & Will Temperley, University of Oxford - Mapping the geographical distribution of the Anopheles vectors.

Abstract submission

Closing date for submission of abstracts was Monday 21 September. All those who submitted will receive a decision as soon as possible after this date. Those with accepted abstracts will be expected to then formally register and pay for attending the event (if they have not already done so).

We received over 20 abstracts, an excellent response. This workshop will contain a mix of oral presentations, traditional paper posters and also electronic displays of work and research.

Opportunities for exhibitors

We have opportunities for companies to exhibit their latest products to an audience of up to 100 delegates. The package for the day is £400, and this includes -

  • Stand within the catering area, providing networking opportunities before the conference and during all refreshment breaks and the extended lunch-break
  • x2 company representatives attending the whole day, including lunch, refreshments etc
  • Logo, company name, website address and brief description of the company in the delegates handout
  • Flyers and other promotional material in the delegate packs
  • Acknowledgment at the start of the programme (including logo, company name and website address on opening slide)
