The IDRN was established in 2002 in order to increase the quality, quantity and NHS-relevance of infectious disease research, initially in London but now across the UK, through establishing collaborations between academic institutions and the HPA. See below, and also click here for further information about the Network, and its activities.

Key Network Qualities
  • Inclusive - any researcher or clinician with an interest in infectious disease research can participate.
  • Multidisciplinary - a key strength is the ability of the network to increase contact and understanding between the wide range of disciplines relevant to infectious disease research.
  • Responsive - events are set up in response to NHS needs and in response to specific calls for funding.
  • Collaborative - the focus is entirely on research which requires collaboration between centres and between disciplines.
  • Supportive - academic staff at the co-ordinating centre have been able to provide epidemiological, methodological and research governance advice to collaborative research groups who approach the IDRN for support.  This has directly contributed to the success of proposals in a variety of priority areas.
  • Multi-centre - All the major institutions in London with an interest in infectious disease and the pharmaceutical industry are involved through the steering group.
  • Accessible - The IDRN facilitates access to reports.
  • Expertise - In a wide range of disciplines.
